The Indian badminton fans’ wait to see World No. 1 and World Championships runner-up, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in action in India will continue for a couple of days more.
Contrary to reports that Chong Wei would arrive in India on August 16 ahead of the second leg of the Indian Badminton League, the Malaysian will land in Mumbai on Saturday and play from the Mumbai leg.
Co-owner of Mumbai Masters, V Chamundeshwarnath, told dna on Friday that Chong Wei will be playing from the Mumbai leg. “He will not play the Lucknow leg,” Chamundeshwarnath confirmed.
This means Mumbai Masters, who made a winning start to their campaign coming back from 1-2 down to win 3-2 against Banga Beats on Thursday night, will have to make do without their icon player in Lucknow also, where they take on Pune Pistons.
After a day’s break on Friday, IBL resumes with the second leg on Saturday with Krrish Delhi Smashers taking on Hyderabad Hotshots at 4pm followed by Mumbai Masters vs Pune Pistons. The other two teams, Banga Beats and Awadhe Warriors, will lock horns on Sunday.
Chong Wei will make his maiden appearance in the League on Tuesday at Mumbai’s National Sports Club of India when Mumbai Masters will take on Delhi Smashers. The Mumbai leg begins on Monday with Hyderabad taking on Pune. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar, brand ambassador of Mumbai Masters, will be in Lucknow to witness the second leg, Chamundeshwarnath said. “Gavaskar will also be in Hyderabad,” he added.
