Have Salman Khan and Govinda patched up?

My title page contents
Well with the recent developments, it seems like the rivalry between Salman Khan and Govinda is now over!

It looks like Salman is on a forgiving spree. After hugging Shahrukh Khan at an iftar party, he has now approached Govinda to be a part of Hero remake.

There were rumors about a rivalry between Salman and Govinda but everything seems to be okay now between the two of them.

If the reports are to be believed, Salman has approached Govinda to be a part of Hero remake titled Heropanti which will have Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty in lead roles. However Govinda has not given his nod to this project yet.

Well all we can say that it will be interesting to see the eternal bachelor and Chi Chi back on silver screen together again. What say?

Priyanka Chopra’s Planes movie review: Been there, seen that!

The animation film is the usual underdog story and offers nothing new to audiences
Film: Planes; Voiceovers: Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Carlos Alazraqui, Priyanka Chopra, Teri Hatcher, Roger Craig Smith; Director: Klay Hall

Set in a vehicular world, Planes is an underdog story complete with a bit of romance, plucky sidekicks, arrogant bad guys and dumb henchmen. The story begins in Lincoln, Nebraska, where our protagonist, the ambitious crop-duster Dusty Crophopper (voiceover by Dane Cook), with a single engine and propeller dreams of participating in the annual international flying race called Wings Around The Globe.

Dusty is encouraged by his motley group of friends that include the feisty forklift Dottie (Teri Hatcher) and the growly fuel truck, Duff (Brad Garrett). He qualifies for the grand race. But mere practice and encouragement from friends does not ensure winning.

After seeing Dusty’s determination, Skipper Riley (Stacy Keach) the veteran retired World War II squadron leader, whose motto is ‘Bono Proveritas – I fly for truth’, decides to help him.

Though Dusty is a good flyer, the issue here is not only speed but the fact that he is afraid of heights. He is scared of flying over 1,000 feet. So Skipper educates Dusty with the norms of speed-flying and draws a strategy on navigation, endurance and speed for him.

The grand race spans over six legs – New York to Iceland to Germany to India to Nepal to China to Mexico. It is witnessed by over 136 nations has 41 contestants participating from various countries. Prominent among them are the three-time racing champion Ripslinger (Roger Craig Smith) as the high-tech arrogant New Yorker, one of the earlier winners in the fray Ishani (Priyanka Chopra) portrayed as the sly Indian, the smitten Mexican El Chupacabra (Carlos Alazraqui). There is also Sky Slycer, Bulldog, Power Propellers and many more.

To add zing to the narration there is a fleet of naval aircraft, a mariachi band and a whole list of supporters.

The voices of the star cast strikingly synchronise with their characters. The film, though verbose, is loaded with pretty good one-liners that keep you chuckling often. Witty one-liners like, “I don’t cry, I am British,” and the sarcastic, “We all know where nice guys finish” highlight cultural stereotypes.

The background score is good. The song Fly high would interest the Indian audience, since it is sung by Priyanka. The other song I am just a love machine, I work for nobody but you, has interesting lyrics and is worth a mention.

Though entertaining, the plot in Klay Hall-directed Planes lacks novelty. Dusty’s challenges are exciting but formulaic and the result predictable. Scenes and the underdog theme seem to be lifted from films like Cars and the recently released, Turbo.

Graphically the computer-generated animated images are good. The planes are classically anthropomorphised, but then, being a vehicular world the scope is limited and it gets visually tedious.

Horror Story trailer: Spine-chilling!

The first trailer of the horror flick directed by Ayush Raina and produced by Vikram Bhatt is out

The first trailer of Horror Story is out and we have to say that it sends down chills and obviously not in a good way. The makers of this horror flick are quite serious with their tagline ‘Fear will consume you’.
The story revolves around seven youngsters who challenge each other to spend the night at the infamous hotel in the heart of the city; little do they know that this will turn out to be the most horrendous night of their life, rather, the last night of their life.

Apart from television actor Karan Kundra, who is making his Bollywood debut, the film also stars fresh faces like Ravish Desai, Hasan Zaidi, Nishant Malkani, Sheetal Singh, Aparna Bajpai, Radhika Menon and Nandini Vaid.

Horror Story which will release on September 13 is produced by Vikram Bhatt and is directed by Ayush Raina who has previously directed Bombay High (one of the short films in Mumbai Cutting).

Vikram Bhatt’s earlier horror flicks like 1920, Haunted and 1920 Evil Returns were complete disasters but Horror Story looks quite promising. Now all we can do is wait for the film to release and see how the audience reacts to this one!

Salman Khan’s hit-and-run-case: New judge for September 5 hearing

With Salman’s case deferred to September 5 and a new judge for the trial, we wonder if Sallu will join Sanju behind the bars
A little birdie tells us that Salman Khan’s hit-and-run case has been transferred to the court of sessions judge D W Deshpande. On Monday, the court adjourned the hearing to September 5.

The case dates back to 2002. On September 28, 2002, a Land Cruiser allegedly driven by Salman ran over a group of pavement dwellers in Bandra. Sallu is charged with the offence of culpable homicide for causing the death of one person and injuring four others by rash and negligent driving. If proven guilty, Salman can be sentenced to a jail term of up to ten years!

Sallu didn’t appear in the court on Monday as he has been granted exemption from personal appearances for two months due to his plea that he had to go abroad for film shooting. Hmmm… Looks like Sallu is being prepared and wrapping up all his shooting commitments, just in case fate isn’t too kind to him! So, Salman fans, cross your fingers till September 5!

Drinking too much coffee? It may be risky

If you have been fond of taking coffee many times in a day, beware! For a new study has found a link between heavy coffee consumption and increased death risk for people aged below 55.

The US study, published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, found a statistically significant 21 percent increased mortality among those who drink more than 28 cups of coffee a week or four cups of coffee a day, Xinhua reported.

Based on age groups, the study found that the risk of death from all causes risen by more than 50 percent for men and women who were younger than 55. But no adverse effects were noticed in heavy coffee drinkers aged over 55.

In this study, researchers from the University of South Carolina, US examined the coffee consumption of more than 43,000 individuals aged between 20 and 87 years from 1971 to 2002. During the 17-year median follow-up period, more than 2,500 participants died.

It was found that younger men had a trend towards higher mortality despite lower consumption. But this became significant at about 28 cups per week where there was a 56 percent increase in mortality from all causes.

Younger women who consumed more than 28 cups of coffee per week had double the risk of dying from all causes than those who did not drink coffee, the study said.

"For those drinking high amounts, there should be some caution, as this dose was associated with at least a signal for increased total mortality in this large study, especially in those under 55 years of age," Xuemei Sui, the study's co-author from the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

"My review is that it is safe to drink low doses (1 to 2 cups and probably 2 to 3 cups per day) of coffee, with even some potential benefits of the low dose," Sui said but adding: "Moderation is the key. Avoid excess drinking coffee."

Why laughter is still the best medicine

Of all the different human behaviours exhibited by mankind, laughter seems like one that’s totally unnecessary for survival (I am pretty sure cavemen didn’t tell jokes to their prey to distract them but maybe it did help them pick prettier mates? More on that later)…. Anyway scientists have always wondered how laughter is so innate and unique to human beings (and primates) that it’s innately present in people of all cultures and ethnicities.

So why do we laugh?
Man’s universal ability to laugh has mystified evolutionary biologists for a long time. Two scientists who’ve been working on this are Pedro Marijuan and Jorge Navarro at the Institu Aragones de Ciencias de la Salud in Spain who believe that the ability to laugh is directly linked to the evolution of the human brain. Most evolutionary biologists at least agree that the human brain started to evolve at breakneck speed when we started living together in groups. This led to greater social complexity and the need to engage a larger group of individuals at the same time. It’s not hard to see how an individual who could charm a larger number of people at the same time would have a greater chance of survival. This notion is backed up by the social brain hypothesis – the belief that brain evolved not to solve everyday problems like how to use tools or hunt but to cope with the demands of a bigger group. Thus, it’s laughing that really makes us (and well our close cousins the primates) different from other animals! That brings us to laughter therapy…

Laughter therapy: Not a joking matter
In the last two decades or so, laughter therapy has gained tremendous popularity in India. It’s not uncommon to go to a park in the morning to find a large group of people guffawing away and the tradition actually has an Indian connection. Hasya yoga or laughter yoga was popularised by Dr Madan Kataria who wrote about the practice in his book Laugh For No Reason. Initially, the West (the poor Anglo-Saxons don’t have the benefit of our 3000-year-old heritage) frowned upon the practice and demanded ‘data’ to back up Dr Kataria’s claims. In time, several small-scale studies showed the immense health benefits of laughter yoga and therapy.

Laughter yoga is in essence a unique exercise that combines laughter with yogic breathing. It’s usually initiated with any stimulus and simple eye contact with others in the group. This in turn leads to real and contagious laughter which has immense health benefits.

The real health benefits of laughing
Laughter actually has tangible health benefits which were covered in psychologist Stephanie Davies’ book Laughology: Improve Your Life with the Science of Laughter which covered many of its health benefits. It explained how women were extremely attracted to men who could make them laugh. It also has a profound effect on our brain and body. It floods our brain with ‘happy hormones’ that makes us more sociable and outgoing. It also helps in making us fitter and helps us look younger!

It also makes us more energetic by improving oxygen supply to our brain which improves efficiency and performance. A study by the University of Maryland Medical Center also found that laughter can actually keep heart disease at bay.

The study, which is the first to indicate that laughter may help prevent heart disease, found that people with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in a variety of situations compared to people of the same age without heart disease.

‘The old saying that ‘laughter is the best medicine,’ definitely appears to be true when it comes to protecting your heart,’ says Michael Miller, M.D., director of the Center for Preventive Cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. ‘We don’t know yet why laughing protects the heart, but we know that mental stress is associated with impairment of the endothelium, the protective barrier lining our blood vessels. This can cause a series of inflammatory reactions that lead to fat and cholesterol build-up in the coronary arteries and ultimately to a heart attack.’

So go on laugh away the blues because life is too short to be taken seriously. While laughter is important it simply can’t keep all the different ailments at bay and that’s why it’s essential to safeguard your future by having a plan in place.

dnb exclusive: Govt wants pvt schools to serve mid-day meals to poor students

If the government were to have its way then private schools across the country might soon have to serve free meals to students from poor background.

Although private schools are currently reserving 25% of their seats for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, a proposal moved by the HRD ministry now expects them to assume even bigger responsibility in educating the underprivileged by extending benefits of the mid-day meal scheme (MDMS) to them.

The government estimates that the implementation of this proposal could cost almost Rs3,000 crore for the 12th Plan period and a note for the Expenditure Finance Committee has been circulated among various ministries for comments.

There are close to three lakh recognised private schools in the country. The HRD ministry is hopeful that 35 lakh underprivileged children enrolled in unaided schools (under the RTE Act) will benefit from the above plan.

The cooking cost incurred by the schools will be reimbursed by the state and central governments. The reimbursement amount will be the same as what the government currently spends on per child a day under MDMS, which is Rs3.34 per child a day for primary students and roughly Rs5 per child per meal for upper primary students.

The intention, though noble, is sure to ruffle feathers among private schools in the country as they are already unhappy over the introduction of compulsory reservation for EWS children.

One of the biggest arguments made against the extension of MDMS to unaided schools is that the government’s cooking cost is not enough to ensure adequate quantity and good quality of meals.

Rajhans Vidyalaya in Mumbai, which already follows the practice of serving meals to its students, spends about Rs45 to provide breakfast and lunch to per child a day. “Our meals are simple, but of good quality.

The government’s cooking cost of Rs4 per child a day against our cost of providing a meal seems quite impractical,” said Deepshikha Srivastava, principal of Rajhans Vidyalaya.

Another reason why educational institutions are not too enthusiastic about the proposal is that the government is yet to reimburse the cost of educating EWS children admitted through the 25% quota of the RTE Act.

Schools in New Delhi first introduced the EWS quota three years ago, but most of them haven’t seen a penny of the promised reimbursement, that is Rs 1,100 per child per month.

“They (state government) haven’t given us what has been our entitlement for the last three years then how will they give us money for providing mid-day meals?” asked Ameeta Wattal of Springdales School, Pusa Road, New Delhi.

Then there is the legitimate fear of MDMS coming in the way of integrating EWS children with other students in a classroom.

This concern is shared by experts as well. “If there is a separate arrangement to feed poor students then I am afraid it could stigmatise these kids and prevent their social integration,” said activist Harsh Mander.

According to ministry officials, the government is aware of the above concern and that they are considering a number of options to prevent stigmatisation of EWS children in the school. “The modalities of implementation will be finalised once the permission for expenditure is in place. We will consider all the concerns then,” said an official not willing to be identified.

Minor accuses Asaram Bapu of sexual assault

Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu was booked by Delhi Police for allegedly raping a minor girl in Jodhur last week.

The minor along with her parents filled an FIR in Kamla Market Police station of Tuesday. A case was registered against the spiritual guru under sections 376, 342, 509, 354 of IPC , Juvenile Justice Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

“We have recorded her statement in front of judicial magistrate under the section 164 of CRPC. As of now we can’t disclose the sequence of the events as it could reveal in the identity of the minor,” said Jitender Luthra, joint commissioner of police, Central range.

According to police the incident took place on August 15 at guru’s ashram in Jodhpur. The girl’s parents, who are staunch followers of Asaram Bapu, came to know about it on August 17 when girl told them about the ordeal. They approached police on August 19. After the medical examination, police lodged an FIR on August 20. “We have sent all case related documents to Jodhpur police and now the case will be handled by them,” added the officer.

The victim hails from Uttar Pradesh and was a student of Asaram’s ashram in Chhindwada, Madhya Pradesh. On August 14, the victim fell ill and the ashram authorities thought she was under the influence of some spirit and therefore sent her to guru’s ashram in Jodhpur.

According to police, Asaram Bapu told her parents that he would perform a special yagna to free the girl from the spirit and they can leave for their home. The parents left after which guru allegedly raped the girl.

Smartphones cause rise in myopia: Surgeon

smartphones have made our lives easier, there is a flip side too -- they cause vision impairment, says a leading laser eye surgeon.
Femalefirst.co.uk reports that Surgeon David Allambym has revealed that smartphones have caused cases of myopia (short-sightedness) among young Britons to surge.

Allamby, founder of Focus Clinics, has reported a 35 percent increase of patients with advancing myopia, since the launch of smartphones in 1997, and warns that worsening Myopia in young adults could increase by 50 percent within 10 years.

Half of Britons own smartphones and spend an average of two hours per day using them. Combined with the amount of hours spent in front of a computer screen, laptop, tablet and television, it means that particularly young people and children are at risk of permanently damaging their vision.

New research found that the average smartphone user holds the handset 30 cm from their face, with some people holding it just 18 cm away, compared to newspapers and books, which are held 40cm away from the eyes.

According to Allamby, excessive screen watching at a close proximity keeps the genes that control myopia activated well beyond the age that short-sightedness would historically have stabilized, around the age of 21. This is known as 'epigenetics'. Myopia used to stop in our early 20s but now we see it progressing throughout the 20s, 30s, and even into our 40s.

"If things continue as they are, I predict that 40-50 percent of 30-year-olds could have myopia by 2033 as a result of smartphones and lifestyles in front of screens, an epidemic we call Screen-Sightedness. People need to ensure they limit screen time wherever possible even by going outside without their phone for a period of time each day, and also seriously consider the age at which they give their children a smartphone," Allamby said.

Allamby says today's generation of children are most at risk of myopia, with children as young as seven being given their first smartphone.

It is predicted that by 2014 children aged 12 to 17 years will be the second biggest market for smartphones behind 18-24 year olds.

Men with high cholesterol at greater heart-attack risk than women

Current clinical guidelines for treating high cholesterol levels do not differentiate between men and women.

A new study has found that high cholesterol is riskier for middle-aged men as compared to women when it comes to having a first heart attack

The study of more than 40,000 Norwegian men and women, shows that being a middle-aged man and having high cholesterol levels results in a negative synergistic effect that the researchers did not observe in women

However, current clinical guidelines for treating high cholesterol levels do not differentiate between men and women.

Erik Madssen from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s (NTNU) Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging, who was first author of the paper with Lars Erik Laugsand, also from NTNU, said that their results suggest that in middle age, high cholesterol levels are much more detrimental for men than women, so that prevention efforts in this age group will have a greater potential to reduce the occurrence of a first heart attack in men.

The researchers used data from the second Nord-Trondelag Health Study, a county-wide survey carried out in 1995-1997 in Nord Trondelag, Norway, that included blood sample collection from 65,000 people.

As the researchers hypothesized that female sex hormones could possibly protect women with respect to the prevalence of first heart attacks, they restricted their analysis to participants who were younger than 60 years old at the time of the survey.

In the end, the researchers had information from 23,525 women and 20,725 men who fit this category. During the nearly 12 years of follow-up on the participants who were younger than 60 years when the survey was conducted, there were 157 new cases of heart attacks in women and 553 in men.

They also conducted a secondary analysis of participants who were 60 years old or older at the time of the survey, which gave them another 20,138 individuals for the analysis. However, there was no evidence of a negative synergistic effect in male participants in this age group.

The study has been published in the September issue of Epidemiology.

Anna Hazare leads largest India Day parade in US

The 33rd annual India Day parade down Madison Avenue Sunday featured 40 colourful floats, marching bands and convertibles and thousands of cheering revellers. Indian social activist Anna Hazare and Bollywood star Vidya Balan led America's largest India Day parade in Manhattan as Indian New Yorkers waving the country's tricolour flags celebrated India's independence.

The 33rd annual India Day parade down Madison Avenue Sunday featured 40 colourful floats, marching bands and convertibles and thousands of cheering revellers marching to the beat of dhols or the Indian drums.

Another highlight of the parade was a replica of the Red Fort in an 80 by 10 feet area in Manhattan near the parade route to showcase India's heritage.

Many parade-goers along the orange, white and green lined route wore "I am Anna" paper hats to signify their support to Hazare, whose anti-corruption crusade has inspired thousands at home and abroad.

One parade-goer wore a multi-coloured turban with three miniature Indian flags stuck in it. He waved an American flag and marched with three dozen members of the Vaishnav Temple of New York in New Hyde Park.

The parade drew elected officials and political candidates, including Reshma Saujani, a Democratic candidate for public advocate and Joe Lhota, a Republican mayoral candidate ahead of the September 10 primary.

"I think our voice is getting more politically powerful," said Saujani, who would be New York city's first Indian-American politician, if elected. "It's important for the community to be out recognizing that."

"New York City's diversity is one of its greatest strengths," said Lhota.

"What we're really doing here is celebrating coming to America." Also joining the event organized by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) were former Indian Chief of Army Staff Gen VK Singh, Tamil film star Sarath Kumar and his wife Radika Sarath Kumar, a television and film actress.

Hazare will be ringing the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange Monday morning to mark India's Independence Day with many IT companies listed on Nasdaq.

Meanwhile, veteran community leader Thomas Abraham, founder of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) led the India Day parade organized by India cultural society of Rockland county in New City in New York Saturday.

Digivijay Singh slams Narendra Modi, calls him fascist

Singh's bid to reach out to "all non-BJP, non-communal parties" comes at a time when there is a realisation in both national parties that the next Lok Sabha election could ultimately be a game of alliances. Slamming as "fascist" Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's pitch for a "Congress Mukt Bharat", Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Monday reached out to all non-BJP parties on the plank of secularism.

Singh said on microblogging site Twitter:

BJP in favour of reservation for Marathas

Opposition leader Vinod Tawde, who is from the Bharatiya Janata Party, has said that his party supports reservation for Marathas. He said so in the Vidhan Parishad.

Tawde criticised the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for having a duplicitous position on reservation for Marathas, saying it is only reminded of the issue when the elections close in.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar has said that he is in favour of reservation for the economically disadvantaged from all communities.

Zuckerberg's account hacked to prove Facebook bug exists

Shreateh used the bug and posted a message on Zuckerberg's wall and explained the flaw which prompted immediate action.n order to prove that social media giant Facebook has a security flaw that can allow people to post on someone’s wall without being in their friends’ list, a security researcher went a step ahead to prove his point and posted about the bug on the CEO’s wall.

Khalil Shreateh from Palestine initially tried to report the bug to Facebook’s security team before posting something to Sarah Goodin’s wall, a friend of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg but he was not taken seriously till then.

Shreateh then used the bug and posted a message on Zuckerberg’s wall and explained the flaw which prompted immediate action and within minutes, the site’s security engineer contacted him and asked for the details.

Facebook has a bounty program where it pays people to report bugs instead of using them maliciously but it did not pay the $US 500+ fee amount to Shreateh because they said he violated the site’s terms of service, although, they asked him to continue to help them find bugs.

The site’s security team then later confirmed that the bug had been fixed and added that bounty was denied because Shreateh did not include enough technical information when he tried to report the bug, the report added.

Saina Nehwal draws first blood

The Independence Day festivity and patriotic spirit was evident at Siri Fort indoor stadium on Thursday as a sizeable capacity crowd turned up at the venue to witness the ‘first’ of the battles that every Indian would love to see in the coming years.

World No. 4 Saina Nehwal versus World No. 10 PV Sindhu!

And going by the mood, the crowd and badminton aficionados were only interested in watching this key clash, impatiently waiting for the first men’s singles between Saemsomboonsuk Tanongsak and RMV Gurusaidutt to finish. Hyderabad Hotshots’ Tanongsak gave his team a 1-0 lead despite losing the first game 15-21.

Sindhu won the toss and chose to receive. “We have never played a match before. I just want to give my 100 per cent today,” was Sindhu’s measured statement before entering the court. It was Saina who took the first two points with ease as Sindhu battled to control her nerves. But once she managed to put her cross court smash in place, there was no looking back. A four straight points made it 4-2 before Saina took one with a down-the-line smash.

Sindhu was on a roll by now and showed her fans why she is being hailed as Indian badminton’s future with her greater court coverage. At 4-8, Saina forged her way back with some powerful baseline smashes to take three straight points, before levelling it 9-9.
Sindhu, on the other hand, displayed scant emotion on the court and continued to stretch Saina with some deceptive court play to take the next five points.

The only time Sindhu looked in any kind of pressure was when Saina regained complete control of the game to take five straight points, and then the lead at 16-15 for the first time in match. At 17-17, it was anybody’s game but Sindhu’s unforced error at the net and then an easy surrender in the next made matters worse for her.

Saina’s experience won her the advantage as Sindhu once again committed an unforced error at 18-19 before giving away the game with yet another nervous loop on the mid of the court.

Having pocketed the first game 21-19, Saina never allowed her 18-year-old opponent to settle down in the second with some clever placements and opportune taps at the net. The experience started telling as Saina raced to 8-4 lead after controlling big rallies in between. Sindhu committed some silly mistakes at this point to hand Saina easy points and a decisive lead at 14-6.

And when finally Saina finished the day’s play with a smash down the middle, the scoreline of 21-19 21-8 had been registered in badminton history as first of the epic clashes.

“In the first game, there was a lot of pressure on me. Also, Sindhu has been doing well at the international level and that gives a lot of confidence to a player. I am happy to win against her and hope to play many more matches with her in the future,” said an elated Saina after her victory.

As the ensuing two matches were split between Hyderabad and Lucknow, it was left to the mixed doubles pair of V Shem Goh/ Pradnya Gadre to beat Marcis Kido-Sapsiree 21-9 19-21 11-8 and hand Hyderabad Hotshots the tie.

Lee Chong Wei to skip Lucknow leg too, to play in Mumbai

The Indian badminton fans’ wait to see World No. 1 and World Championships runner-up, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in action in India will continue for a couple of days more.

Contrary to reports that Chong Wei would arrive in India on August 16 ahead of the second leg of the Indian Badminton League, the Malaysian will land in Mumbai on Saturday and play from the Mumbai leg.

Co-owner of Mumbai Masters, V Chamundeshwarnath, told dna on Friday that Chong Wei will be playing from the Mumbai leg. “He will not play the Lucknow leg,” Chamundeshwarnath confirmed.

This means Mumbai Masters, who made a winning start to their campaign coming back from 1-2 down to win 3-2 against Banga Beats on Thursday night, will have to make do without their icon player in Lucknow also, where they take on Pune Pistons.

After a day’s break on Friday, IBL resumes with the second leg on Saturday with Krrish Delhi Smashers taking on Hyderabad Hotshots at 4pm followed by Mumbai Masters vs Pune Pistons. The other two teams, Banga Beats and Awadhe Warriors, will lock horns on Sunday.

Chong Wei will make his maiden appearance in the League on Tuesday at Mumbai’s National Sports Club of India when Mumbai Masters will take on Delhi Smashers. The Mumbai leg begins on Monday with Hyderabad taking on Pune. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar, brand ambassador of Mumbai Masters, will be in Lucknow to witness the second leg, Chamundeshwarnath said. “Gavaskar will also be in Hyderabad,” he added.

Dead is alive

Elena Pereira’s relationship with art cannot be defined; she loves it, she uses it and she experiments with it. It’s safer to assume that more than Elena choosing art, it was art that chose her. A conceptual artist from Netherlands,

Elena is a bit of German and a bit of Indian. Soft spoken and not your typical artist, Elena doesn’t bring in divine references or the wonderfulness of life into a conversation. In a chat with After Hrs, Elena talks about her obsession with flowers, why she does what she does and more...

When did you know that you didn’t want to do regular art but push the boundaries of creativity?
For me, it wasn’t much of a choice, it kind of happened. Some of my work just went in that direction. The thing is, I never stick with one medium. To me it’s about the concept I am working on and not about a medium that I am trying to manipulate. I think just before my masters program, I had taken up a design job and I really enjoyed it — that’s when I thought conceptual art was something I could do.

To you, what really is art? Is it your way of perceiving the world or your way of expressing what you see around you?
I think it would be understanding and handling the world. It’s not so much personal; I am more interested in what other people think and see. For me, art is not some kind of therapy.

Most of your work is very deconstructed — by and large, you’ve broken elements of something down and then reconstructed it by adding other elements. Do you choose these multiple mediums by instinct or do you plan it carefully?
It’s kind of like a puzzle of different things — sometimes I plan it and I know exactly what I want to do. And then there are times when I am working on something and then realise it’s too perfect. So I try and do something to add imperfections to it.

I look at all the material around me, which I collect with a vengeance, and try to understand how I can reinvent that material. For me, it’s not about the functionality of the material but how it can be used. But what I like doing most is capturing the vulnerability of these materials.

I noticed a slight obsession with flowers. What about them do you love so much?
I never seem to get enough of them, isn’t it? Incidentally, I don’t even like flowers. Actually, it’s not so much about the flowers but how people use them. Flowers are messages or symbols of many emotions of life —  they can represent celebration, sorrow, life or death. That is what I capture.

When did you move to Bangalore? Why?
I have been coming to Bangalore for the past seven years but moved here only last December. I decided to have my own studio here. I find Bangalore very interesting — it’s laid-back and has a keen eye for culture and art. Everything seems to happen in an organic kind of way over here.

Take us through your exhibition that’s starting tomorrow...
The exhibition is called Reflectives and I am showing 19 objects/installations. When the gallery asked me to do an exhibition, and while I was collecting materials,

I realised that the gallery is quite an amazing space. It has all this glass around — so I started working with metal and flowers for the show. The idea behind this show is how do we see ourselves in reflective surfaces. But it’s not about mirrors per se but more about perspective.

Celery, artichokes can help kill human pancreatic cancer cells

Elvira de Mejia, a University of Illinois professor of food chemistry and food toxicology, said that apigenin alone induced cell death in two aggressive human pancreatic cancer cell lines. Celery, artichokes, and herbs, Mexican oregano, have apigenin and luteolin, flavonoids in them which help kill human pancreatic cancer cells by inhibiting an important enzyme, according to two studies.

Elvira de Mejia, a University of Illinois professor of food chemistry and food toxicology, said that apigenin alone induced cell death in two aggressive human pancreatic cancer cell lines.

Mejia asserted that they received the best results when they pre-treated cancer cells with apigenin for 24 hours, then applied the chemotherapeutic drug gemcitabine for 36 hours.

Jodee Johnson, a doctoral student in de Mejia’s lab who has since graduated, said that the trick seemed to be using the flavonoids as a pre-treatment instead of applying them and the chemotherapeutic drug simultaneously.

She asserted that even though the topic is still controversial, our study indicated that taking antioxidant supplements on the same day as chemotherapeutic drugs may negate the effect of those drugs.

Johnson explained that happens as flavonoids can act as antioxidants; one of the ways that chemotherapeutic drugs kill cells is based on their pro-oxidant activity, meaning that flavonoids and chemotherapeutic drugs may compete with each other when they’re introduced at the same time.

The scientists found that apigenin inhibited an enzyme called glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3 beta), which led to a decrease in the production of anti-apoptotic genes in the pancreatic cancer cells.

Apoptosis means that the cancer cell self-destructs because its DNA has been damaged.

In one of the cancer cell lines, the %age of cells undergoing apoptosis went from 8.4 % in cells that had not been treated with the flavonoid to 43.8 % in cells that had been treated with a 50-micromolar dose. In this case, no chemotherapy drug had been added.

Treatment with the flavonoid also modified gene expression. “Certain genes associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines were highly upregulated,” de Mejia said.

The study has been published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research.

Heart's own stem cells could help treat cardiac failure

Researchers have highlighted, for the first time, the natural regenerative capacity of a group of stem cells that reside in the heart.
According to the new study these cells are responsible for repairing and regenerating muscle tissue damaged by a heart attack that leads to heart failure.

The study shows that if the stem cells are eliminated, the heart is unable to repair after damage. If the cardiac stem cells are replaced the heart repairs itself, leading to complete cellular, anatomical and functional heart recovery, with the heart returning to normal and pumping at a regular rate.

Also, if the cardiac stem cells are removed and re-injected, they naturally ‘home’ to and repair the damaged heart, a discovery that could lead to less-invasive treatments and even early prevention of heart failure in the future.

The study had set out to establish the role of cardiac stem cells (eCSCs) by first removing the cells from the hearts of rodents with heart failure. This stopped regeneration and recovery of the heart, demonstrating the intrinsic regenerative capacity of these cells for repairing the heart in response to heart failure.

Current treatments for heart failures are aimed at treating the underlying causes, such as coronary heart disease, heart attack and blood pressure through lifestyle changes, medicines and in severe cases, surgery.

These treatments are sometimes successful in preventing or delaying heart failure. However, once heart failure develops the only curative treatment is heart transplantation.

By revealing this robust homing mechanism, which causes cardiac stem cells to home to and repair the heart’s damaged muscle, the findings could lead to less invasive treatments or even preventative measures aimed at maintaining or increasing the activity of the heart’s own cardiac stem cells.

Dr Georgina Ellison, the first author of the paper and Professor Bernardo Nadal-Ginard, the study’s corresponding author, both from the Centre of Human and Aerospace Physiological Sciences and the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at King’s, said that in a healthy heart the quantity of cardiac stem cells is sufficient to repair muscle tissue in the heart.

They said that however, in damaged hearts many of these cells cannot multiply or produce new muscle tissue. In these cases it could be possible to replace the damaged cardiac stem cells or add new ones by growing them in the laboratory and administering them intravenously.

Ellison said that understanding the role and potential of cardiac stems cells could pave the way for a variety of new ways to prevent and treat heart failure.

She said that these new approaches involve maintaining or increasing the activity of cardiac stem cells so that muscle tissue in the heart can be renewed with new heart cells, replacing old cells or those damaged by wear and tear.

Ellison asserted that the cardiac stem cells naturally home to the heart because the heart is their home – they know to go there.

She explained that current practices involve major operations such as injection through the heart’s muscle wall (intramyocardial) or coronary vessels (intracoronary).

She added that the homing mechanism shown by our research could lead to a less invasive treatment whereby cardiac stem cells are injected through a vein in the skin (intravenously).

The study has been published in the journal Cell.
