Salim-Sulaiman compose for Hollywood

The composer duo is composing for a Hollywood film called Sold.

Bollywood came to Salim-Sulaiman when they were still concentrating on advertisement jingles, because sometimes it helps to be at the right place at the right time.
Working in the same building as film director Sanjay Gupta, the brothers’ work was overheard by the Bollywood director, who immediately signed them on to compose and record the theme of his 1997 Kajol and Saif Ali Khan-starrer Hameshaa. Before they knew it, Salim and Sulaiman had captured Bollywood’s attention.

Today Salim and Sulaiman are among Bollywood’s top music directors, and everyone is dancing to their tunes. And now it seems like they are in a mood to groove Hollywood to their tunes as well.

Our khabroo tells us, the composer duo is composing music for the Hollywood film Sold, produced by Academy Award winner Jeffrey D Brown. The film, which deals with human trafficking, was shot in Kolkata recently. “It is a special film and we’re really proud to be a part of this,” said Salim.

Composer duo Salim-Sulaiman released their first song from the show on the special occasion of Eid and we highly recommend it

Over the past few years, composer duo Salim-Sulaiman seems to have found a comfort space in Bollywood. Having scored for movies such as Chak De! India, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Kurbaan and Fashion, the duo has composed for many Indi-pop performers, including Aasmaan, Shweta Shetty and others. In their own words, they seek to return to their roots and present the music culture of India in a form the youth of today can identify with. The formidable duo’s soundtrack for Coke Studio@MTV reflects a distinctly Sufiana influence in feel and sound.

The soothing composition starts with Munawar Masoom Khan’s impressive vocals singing Bismillah. However, the overall feel and light arrangement of the track belies the tone set by the composer duo, as Kailash Kher provides able support. The team gets into their element as the song starts playing. The track blends a contemporary arrangement of instruments with a distinctly Sufi sound.

With Irfan Siddiqui’s Urdu lyrics and profound meaning derived from the words, Bismillah is certainly a good change from the usual meaningless Bollywood numbers. Without wasting time, just tune in and get all set to be transported into a heavenly world!
